Access Theatre is an inclusive group offering access to the performing arts for individuals who may not otherwise have the opportunity - adults with learning disabilities and a range of physical and sensory impairments. They meet weekly for drama and dance activities and regularly produce high-quality public performances. They employ experienced professional arts practitioners to develop a range of skills including dance, film animation, drama, puppetry and singing. They support the members to fully participate in all activities including decision making, planning projects and appointing practitioners and fundraising.
The Ruth Burden Community Trust awarded Access Theatre this summer with £1,000 towards their musical ‘Greece Lightning’. The company comprised 14 adults with learning disabilities, their carers and volunteers, all from the Launceston area. The award was used to bring in Peter Kyrke-Smith a skilled and experienced composer and musical director. There were two performances at Launceston Town Hall, over 100 people attended.
Sarah Pym, Co-ordinator commented “The grant made the Greece Lightning production possible; without the help, we would not have secured the services of a skilled professional or been able to support our volunteers properly. We would also not have been able to fulfil the potential of these talented individuals and raise the awareness of their disabilities. Working with a professional like Peter Kyrke-Smith increased the skills, confidence and enjoyment of the group. Families, friends and carers were amazed by the quality of the production. Having to learn lines and remember dance and movement sequences greatly increased the well-being of the members through a strong sense of achievement and satisfaction”
